The cup-shaped goldfinch nest is so beautifully constructed with an intricate weaving of dried grass it survived an extremely cold and snowy winter intact. I found it wedged between 2 branches of a small Popular about 3 feet off the ground.

This photo is a Winner thanks to its simple, clean and natural theme. Of course, there were many very good images in the Challenge (together with the usual percentage of total thematical flops)... but I am only allowed to award one among the best! So congrats on your Win! :)

Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo in my home studio.

Time

It was mid-morning.

Lighting

I used natural light from a nearby window.

Equipment

DMC-ZS100

Inspiration

I found the goldfinch nest lodged in a bare branch of a Thorn Apple tree. These nests are tightly woven into a small cup shape and had survived a cold, snowy winter in the Catskill Mountains of NY. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera because late winter/early spring is a bleak time in the Catskills and I didn’t think there would be anything of interest to shoot (lesson learned). Therefore, I removed the nest, brought it back to my home studio, placed it on a dark background, and took the photo.

Editing

I did very little post-processing, cropping and slight color enhancement.

In my camera bag

I only use my camera.

Feedback

Always have your camera available. While this photo has won awards and a Challenge, I regret not photographing it in the natural setting.
