Behind The Lens

Location

I currently live I Zweibrucken Germany, as a US employee working at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, this house my wife picked out for us to rent due to its beautiful garden and stunning views, including all the flowers and trees and wonderful landscaping done by the owner Karl Müller.

Time

I took this photo closer to the late afternoon, during spring.

Lighting

I used natural lighting and positioned myself so that the sun was at my back, I also climbed up a ladder to get a better perspective.

Equipment

My Nikon D850 and a manual 35mm lens that came off of an old Nikon 35 mm film camera that my old supervisor spray painted gold and mounted to a plaque as my going away gift. He told me to try that old 35mm lens on my D850 and I might get some great photos and I was surprised by the results, thanks Tad!

Inspiration

I love living in this house, spring time everything comes alive and there are so many photos to take I never run out of options, I’m going to be sad when I have to leave!

Editing

I didn’t do a whole lot of adjustments, but I did use some Lightroom presets to bring out the details and the pink.

In my camera bag

I have a very basic kit, photography is expensive and I spent my budget on the D850 body, at the time I had access to a friends lenses but since I have moved to Germany I have had to buy my own! So right now I’m rocking a Sigma 50mm 1.4, a manual 35 mm 1.4, and a kit 24-120, and using an older used SB600 flash.

Feedback

Bring a ladder and move around a lot, play with the framing, and lower the ISO and open the aperture to bring the foreground in focus and separate the background a little with some blur, for photos where the whole subject is the same color and texture it will help your photo stand out a little bit more.
