Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the island of Santorini in Ammoudi Bay. I walked out onto a boat ramp and saw the scene and decided that I would try to do my best to capture it even without a tripod at night.

Time

I took this photo right as the sun had set and was already below the horizon. We were leaving the bay and I decided that this would be a cool photo but there was no tripod and not enough light so I set the camera on the ground and use my wallet to prop the lens up to get the composition that I wanted and took a couple of long exposures.

Lighting

What captivated me about this scene was the light reflecting off of the walls and the colors of the buildings looked like something from an old postcard and I wanted to convey that.

Equipment

Are used my Nikon D850 and a 24-120mm kit lens and my wallet as a tripod.

Inspiration

On the island of Santorini there is no shortage of great spots to take beautiful photos and everywhere where you turn you find something that is inspiring that you want to shoot. This scene was no exception.

Editing

I do most of my stuff in either camera raw or Lightroom. This particular photo was worked in Lightroom on my iPad... I did not need to tweak a whole lot but I did mess with the color temperature and some saturation settings a little bit.

In my camera bag

I am still working on my equipment bag but I usually have my Nikon D850, 20 42120MM kit lens, SB 600 flash, and extra batteries including equipment.

Feedback

Long exposure photography can help overcome lens challenges when you don’t have fast lenses but the only drawback to that is you need a tripod, do not be afraid to use anything you have with you a jacket sweater a wallet a rock to put your camera somewhere safe and dry and compose your shot for long exposure, and don’t forget to use the timer to take your photos with to reduce camera shake.
