I took this photo on the North Shore of Oahu Hawaii. I was there for work and I was still a new photographer, I decided to walk up and down Turtle Beach looking for anything I could take a photo of. It’s Hawaii, so there is no shortage of wonderful photos to take everywhere you look!Time
It was about 6 am, and I didn’t have to be at work until around 11 am that day, who can say no to a sunrise walk along the beach in Hawaii!Lighting
I wish I had known more about neutral density filters, or about using a tripod for long exposure shots so I could have exposed one shot for the sky, and one shot for the beach. At the time I was still new to photography and just took multiple hand held exposures.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3x and a 24-120 kit lens.Inspiration
I was looking for anything I could take a photo of that I thought would represent a picturesque view of Hawaii. My room was a 5 minute walk to the beach so I decided to walk down and try to catch the sunrise and then anything else that caught my eye.Editing
I really wish I had used a graduated neutral density filter for this shot, so what I did was go into Lightroom and tried to mask out the shoreline and the sky and did my best to adjust the exposure in order to bring out as many details as possible, so the only post-processing done was done in Lightroom. I am not afraid to use Lightroom or Photoshop to bring out a photo, if it makes what I am seeing closer to reality, my goal is to let people see things the way I see it, or as I see it in person in the moment. In my camera bag
These days I don’t have a whole lot of equipment with me. I keep a Lowel Pro back pack, D850, 24-120 kit lens, and a SB600 flash and light diffuser.Feedback
My advice for any beginner looking to catch a great photo would be to visit the place more than once. Look around, frame the shot in your mind and if you feel stuck then just start taking photos. If you have a digital camera then don’t be afraid to take a bunch of photos you think you will just delete because the chances are you may find one once you bring it up on the computer and can do some kind of editing to bring it out, and always shoot in RAW.
