Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during our honeymoon in 2015. We visited the Railway Museum in Budapest, Hungary. There was also this restored but working Tschaika GAZ 13 exhibited that has served as an official car for a Hungarian Prime Minister Jen? Fock in the 70's. The car was later converted by the Hungarian State Railways into a railcar.

Time

This is one of my favourite photos I took during that time, a unique piece of history. The photo was shot on a warm but bit cloudy day in March.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the car lit by direct sunlight, but during the day we had more or less cloudy weather. I was about to give up my plan, when I got a bit direct support from the weather, and managed to catch the perfect light for the shot.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon Coolpix L820 with no flash and no tripod.

Inspiration

My addiction for old classic cars. As a kid, my grandfather had a now classic car VAZ-2101 "Zhiguli" I really liked and always took me with him whenever he needed to drive his beloved car. He also a few old classic car models I inherited later.

Editing

I took the photo in Black&White mode, in order to bring the lights and shadows out rather than the colours. I also needed to change the background sky because the auto white balance set made it too bright, almost burnt out. Then I removed parts of a person's body who was crouching behind the car by using an image adjustment layer.

In my camera bag

I still have the Nikon L820 bridge camera along with a Nikon D3400 and its 18-55mm kit lens and a 50 mm lens in my bag, spare batteries for both cameras and a tripod.

Feedback

Before making a photo of an old classic car, try to find a good position that fits for your plans and prepared to be quick enough shooting the photos, in case of unfitting weather or disturbing crowd of people. Also try "thinking in a BW style", which can be sometimes better for an old car than a coloured photo.
