Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is of Lake Eufaula about 10 miles east of the town Eufaula, Oklahoma. Lake Eufaula is over 700 shorelines miles. This was off of highway 9. It is not an easily accessible spot where I took this one.

Time

This was taken at sunset as the sun set and gave glow to the sky that had lovely clouds.

Lighting

The clouds in the spot were slanted and angled in such a way I JUST HAD to get to the bottom of the rock wall to get a lower angle where the clouds pointed and reflected on the water. Because I am disabled with spine disease and have serious balance issues and must avoid any kind of fall it was a bit tricky to get to the bottom right where the clouds pointed. SO I just carefully inched my way to the bottom one rock at a time. NO tripod. Laid on the ground once I got to that level and just used my hands to steady the camera. Did not use a flash just the natural lighting and appropriate f stop and speed for sunset lighting time.

Equipment

Nikon D3100 18-55 mm 5.6 lens. NO tripod. Just laid on the ground and used my hands with arms propped on the ground to steady.

Inspiration

Sunsets are my favorite. This is my favorite sunset spot. The clouds this evening were like a give away at my favorite spot! Was so pretty. The way it angled like a triangle and reflected right there was too much to not at least try to get a picture. The lake was frozen as most of Oklahoma had severe winter storm with record below zero temperatures. SO my idea was things were starting to thaw was to get some pictures of the lake still partly frozen and never in 10 years living near the lake saw it frozen like this. So when the clouds appeared it was even better than getting frozen lake pictures. Part of it was thawed and just enough to give off a nice reflection from the give away clouds.

Editing

I think I may have smoothed it just a little bit . I cannot really remember each picture post editing. May have added a little bit of contrast but not much.

In my camera bag

Nikon D3100 with 18 to 55 mm lens and now have 70mm lens with infinity. Canon XS 400 IS powershoot. Fuji XP90 water proof camera. Various cell phones. One lens hood. NO tripod yet! Working on getting one!

Feedback

Sometimes reflections on large bodies of water may look better if caught at lower angle. If opportunity for reflection of large bodies of water arise, try the low angle and other angles. I literally laid on the ground to get it.
