This photo was taken during The Great Gathering of Equine Photographers in Poland, organized by Katarzyna Okrzesik-Miko?ajek, my dear friend and one of the best equine photographers. Whole photoshoot was arranged in the pasture next to the stable, which is called Neptuno Stable. Perfect place for someone who wants majestic Spanish horses for a photoshoot!Time
It was taken during a day, when the light is not so good, usually. But in this moment the sun went behind the clouds, so it was slightly darker and for me - even better. I prefer photoshoots without sun at all, when it's cloudy.Lighting
I used the light that we had at the time, but not a direct sun. Cloudy moment was perfect for this shot, so any part of the horse is burned out during a process thanks to those conditions.Equipment

During a photoshoot with a horse running free on a pasture, I always want to take few pictures focued solely on him. Tight frames, maybe even the details. Sometimes the background can be distracting, so those pictures can help me show horse in his truest, majestic and gentle form. When I took this photo and saw it for the first time, I immediately thought about sculptures of horses, that we can see in the museums.Editing
In this case, I didn't do a lot of "heavy" post-processing. I'm taking pictures in raw format, so colors are washed out at the beginning. I brightened the picture, whitened the horse a bit to emphasize the color of its coat, and also took out the background from the shadows to bring out the nice green color of the trees. With the horse, I did a simple dodge & burn to "pop him out" from the picture and make him look more like a sculpture.In my camera bag
In my pack you can always find my lovely Nikon D7100, Nikkor Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. This is the best lens for animal photography nad sport. I can't live without it! ;) I also love Nikkor 85mm f/1.8, but I also have Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 - both are great for portraits. I'm always taking with me my MacBook PRO and, of course, one external drive to put my photos there. And the most important thing worth mentioning? Food ;) I can't go anywhere without something to eat because once I'm in my "photography zone", I usually forget all about it. And, of course, bottle of water. Even in winter, I need something to remind me about healthy way of living ;)Feedback
Don't be afraid to "cut" animals and put them in tight frames. But remember about the space in place, where they're looking, so you'll avoid the "cage" feel on the picture. If you have lens with f/2.8 or f/1.8, the background is basically making itself with bokeh, so try and find this around you and put the animal there. Don't go with "cute and colorful" vibe because it's working only sometimes. That kind of pictures don't need a lot of attention in the post-processing. Go with natural look, it's the best advice with animal photography :)
