Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Poland, in the Wigry Lake. It's in the Wigry National Park - one of the biggest national parks in this country.

Time

It was taken during a sunset, in October. It was cold so I couldn't get in the water to have even better results, but I didn't have, as you can see.

Lighting

I wanted to show the beautiful sunset we had that day in the background and of course horse as a main subject. I don't use any artificial light for horse pictures. It's all natural, with the natural light.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 70-200mm f/2,8G ED VR II. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Taking a picture like this is not easy. I wanted to have one of those in my portfolio for a long time! Having an opportunity to make a photoshoot with a horse in a lake is actually a dream location for equine photographers! Especially during colorful sunset. My inspiration is always nature surrounding me and of course people I'm travelling with.

Editing

I deleted a rope from a picture. because all of those "free" horses are usually not so free ;) I made a sunset looks more colorful because raw picture was quite "flat" with colors. I also sharpened the image to try and pop-out the droplets of water and of course sharpened the horse to focus your attention on her.

In my camera bag

I always have with me my one and only camera Nikon D7100 with lens Nikkor Nikkor 70-200mm f/2,8G ED VR II - this is my main equipment to take pictures of horses or dogs. I also have other lenses, like Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 (for portraits) and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 (also for portraits). One thing I have that other photographers probably don't have are ropes for portraits with animals. 2 sets for horses and 2 sets for dogs. If you want to take pictures of "free" animals, this is a must to have in your bag ;) It's easier to erase it from the picture than normal halters.

Feedback

Don't feel bad or down it it's not gonna happen with the first try or second. Most of the pictures with horses galloping through water are out of focus, you can't see their faces, because of too much water, sometimes they don't want to canter and they just trotting around, feeling proud of themselves ;) Just don't give up and try until you'll get this one in a million shot! Also try to find a place "next" to the horse - you'll catch it better than in front of it.
