Location
it was early in the morning, my friend Octavio, his kids and I wanted to visit a nature reserve in Sta Elena, near Monteverde. Because it was too early, I watched the colibris at a nearby cafe. He (yep it's a male) looked far better sittiing down than in the air. I managed to get a few shots of the two of them. Yes they are flying gems and I urgently need a decent tele lens.Time
Must have been between 7 and 8, we had headed off at 6 am. the light is nicely soft in the mountains early in the day.Lighting
Provided by the sun and God's generous gift of an almost cloud free morning.Equipment
a borrowed Sigma 500 mm f4 and my D800eInspiration
flying beauty is enough inspiration. I can wait to get back home and take more of them.Editing
Yes I cropped some ugly red bokeh and wiped another very red blurry advertising thingy from the background. No big deal.In my camera bag
Now, on reduced gear in Belgium, I have still the battered D4 the D800E . Lenses are usually the 300 2.8 or the 180.28 macro, a newly acquired 24-35 or the standard 24-70 , which looks as if it has been through the war and the beloved old 18 3.5. Sometimes if am allowed to go out (.... restrictions) I take my very old 55 f1.2 for the night.Feedback
Be patient. Be patient. Ignore tourists and waffling tourist guides. Be patient till they ae gone. Or if you live in the Americas (can't wait to get back) put a feeder in your garden and be even more patient. Oh, and know your birds.. That really helps.
