The origin of the mill's current name, Lana Mariana, remains a mystery to this day. Descendants of Mr. Christiaan van Veen (miller from 1900-1920) have said that they called him "De Lange Moriaan" at the time.
The original mill dates from 1618 but burned down twice, namely in 1832 and 1890. From the fire caused by a lightning strike in 1832, there is still an exchange of letters between the District Commissioner and the Mayor of the municipality about possible compensation from the Unforeseen Disaster Fund. It did not come to that because the owner turned out to be insured.
