Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken sitting in a cafe in Cape Town, South Africa, waiting for the rain to stop that had ruined a photo shoot in the city streets.

Time

It was about 9am that morning.

Lighting

The lighting is natural light only. I overexposed to blend out distracting background details, and it helped to get the slight reflection on the screen to be more visible.

Equipment

Because of the planned shoot I had my trusty Canon 7D on me. I was using a Canon EF-S 10-18mm lens that day. One of my absolute favourite lenses.

Inspiration

Out of a quick testing shot it occured to me that the phone reminded me of the monolith is 2001. So Ibtried to take a quasi-macro shot and making only the phone's black shape visible.

Editing

Apart from a bit of contrast adjusting and removing a dustbspeck by cloning the image is unedited.

In my camera bag

A Canon body (mainly D), a Sigma 150-600mm 'C', a tripod, an EF 50mm prime lens, and most often a Canon EF-S 10-18 lens.

Feedback

Make sure that the background can be blended out. Use a narrow aperture (Around f16) as you are getting very close to the subject.
