The submersible Makali'i - Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii - 2018 December 05)

The submersible Makali'i operated by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) spent the summer of 1981 at the Enewetak lab. Both visiting and staff scientists made dives to the lagoon bottom, to the bottoms of some of the thermonuclear blast craters, and on the steep seaward reef. Directly below, the Makali'i is towed into position on its launching platform.

Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this at the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii).

Time

I captured this photo at 12:24 PM HST (2018 December 05).

Lighting

The room was quite dark. The lighting was from the fluorescent and incandescent lighting (including spot lights) inside the windowless room.

Equipment

I captured this image hand-held with my cellular phone - a Samsung S8+ SM-G955W. The phone camera was set for automatic. The settings the celllular phone camera automatically set for this photo was f1.7, 1/10, ISO 400 Automatic White Balance, Exposure 0 step, focal length 4.25 (35mm focal = 26mm), Center-weighted Average Metering.

Inspiration

Being in Hawai'i for the first time was all the inspiration I needed for the short 5 nights we spent there. The inspiration to capture this photo was to capture as much as I could as we went to as many places as we could while in Maui. I loved the colours and the 'out of this world' look of this particular submersible (it was the first and only submersible I have seen.)

Editing

This photo was shot in JPEG. I used ACDSee Pro 6 to make adjustments to the lighting and exposure so as to brighten it, and added some sharpening.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D750, D200 and D5100 cameras in my bags along with my Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, a Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD, a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G Lens, a Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens, Nikon f/2.8 105mm Micro f/2.8 lens, and a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens. I also always have my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra cellular phone with me (I like to use it when I want or need a wider angle photo.) If I am going to go for a drive to spend some time out and about shooting, I like to take all my cameras and lenses... you just never know what you're going to need. If I am going out to shoot something specific, I take my Nikon D750 along with the 70-200mm lens, 24-70mm lens, 50mm lens, and depending what my shooting goal is, sometimes the 105mm lens.

Feedback

My advice for others is to always have extra batteries and to keep your batteries charged up, keep your camera(s) handy (you never know when an opportunity to shoot will arise), and to appreciate everything around you and to always look for photo opportunities. Then shoot, shoot, shoot.... shoot as often as you can. Look for photo opportunities everywhere including in your own home and/ or yard... When you are on vacation or even a day trip out and about, take your camera(s) and use it/ them. Try to take advantage of the lighting - when it is sunny or when it is cloudy or if rain or any other weather system is moving in, and play with your f stops. Take more than one photo... you can always delete them if they do not turn out. I shot this photograph in "Auto mode" with the camera on my cell phone as it was all I had with me at the time. Sometimes, the best camera is the one you have with you (even if it is a cell phone camera.) If I ever have a similar opportunity, I would take one of my DSLR's and at least one versatile lens. (Hindsight is 20/20.) When you are shooting, my advice is to also try different cameras, lenses, and camera settings. My most important advice of all is to pick up your camera and go out and have fun!!
