Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken by Friendship Park in Battle Creek, Michigan in 2018. The waters had risen to the points where riverbanks were overflowing and some roads were shut down or at an hour-to-hour basis.

Time

This photo was captured midday. Lighting was right and I wanted reflections on the water.

Lighting

Make sure your camera settings are right. Underexposed can usually be saved but if you wash an image out it can cost you great images.

Equipment

Canon Rebel t6, EFS 18-55mm. Macro 0.25m/0.8ft lens. Possibly my tulip hood.

Inspiration

The flooding! The water hadn't been that high to my recollection ever. I had the idea to share them to the local news but my nerves got the best of me and I sat on it.

Editing

I raised clarity and dehaze, sharpened the image, dropped highlights, increased contrast, and adjusted shadows so more details of the local foliage and architecture pop.

In my camera bag

My canon and standard lens, a tulip hood, a EFS 55-250mm Macro 0.85m/2.8ft telephoto lens. A few colored/shaded filters. Lens wipes, a prop and tripod plate, and a few backup masks for if i run into people congested areas.

Feedback

Floods don't happen often and cities move quicky to fix situations like this. Go out when you can but stay safe. The shot could be amazing but an uninsured camera is a lot of tears.
