Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Wilder Creek Conservation Club near Marshall Michigan

Time

We aimed for golden hour but these were taken just before that quality had fully manifested. The girls were freshly snacked and off school and hadn't seen each other in a few days so shenanigans ensued.

Lighting

Golden hour is nice but facing your client properly I've found to be more important. I can edit in golden hour qualities, I can't make a nose where my image is over exposed.

Equipment

Canon Rebel T6, 18-55mm lens. The human aspect; my assistant dancing to music and making faces in the background.

Inspiration

I worked in a box studio for a while years back and as much as I love candid captures sometimes a little set up spot can bring the subject forward more because you're not distracted trying to get the wild details to align.

Editing

I drew shadows forward and tightened/brightened the image up a bit. Erased an identification sign as they are set up to educate visitors about the trees to smooth out the backdrop.

In my camera bag

Lens wipes, camera, macro and telescoping lenses. Always, always at least one extra fully charged battery.

Feedback

Demanding a kid be serious and give a genuine smile is like asking a monkey to change your oil. They can but it may look weird. Laughter produces genuine smiles every time, just make sure your shutter speed is set high and you bracket your shots. I like to carry funny hats for resistant smilers.
