Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken stood on a bridge over the River Frome at the small town of Wareham in Dorset, UK.

Time

Sunrise

Lighting

It was perfect conditions with a spectacular sky.

Equipment

I use a Canon 5DS R with Canon 70-200mm f/2 lens and Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I had planned to visit the river ahead of time having been there a few times. It is a picturesque area so plenty of opportunities for some great shots.

Editing

Some fine-tuning to the exposure and using Photoshop clarity helped bring out some extra definition to the reflections.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded to the wonderful Canon 5DR S which offers incredible levels of detail and dynamic range. Lenses are key and for landscapes I tend to use the Canon EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM Lens lens along with the Canon 70-20mm f/2.8 L USM. The other essential when outdoors is Lee filters - I always carry ND grads, a Little Stopper, Big Stopper along with a circular polariser.

Feedback

Due to the short window available at either sunrise or sunset it is best to scope out locations with potential and plan according to the weather. A good tripod is a must to minimise the risk of camera shake. Using an appropriate ND (soft/hard) helps glance out the exposure of dark foreground as the camera exposes for the bright sky in many situations. Typically I have an 0.6 and 0.9 to hand and use both combined to obtain a balanced exposure which I prefer to areas of black.
