Behind The Lens

Location

This portrait was taken as part of a shoot for an award winning tattoo artist.

Time

Daytime but studio can be blacked out so external light was not a factor.

Lighting

This was shot with a hexagonal softbox set towards the left hand side of the sitter just around head height. A further softbox was situated on the right to provide some fill.

Equipment

Shot with my Canon 5DS R on a Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 Carbon Fibre Tripod fitted with the Manfrotto XPro 3 Way Head. Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens. I frequent use this lens as it always gives a great perspective for portraits and provides flexibility to zoon in from without having to move the tripod.

Inspiration

Typically I do not over-think most portrait sessions but prefer to work spontaneously and use whatever the sitter turns up in to make an interesting shot. This sitter tended to wear dark clothing so naturally the black moody backdrop lended itself to a more dramatic portrait.

Editing

Primarily I adjust levels in RAW and then move onto Nik Efex Pro filter in PS which is great for sorting out white balance and contrast etc. After getting the basics right I decided to add a rain overlay and then applied a High Pass filter in PS to get a crisper but not over-sharpened look.

In my camera bag

Always favour my Canon 5DSR. Lenses for portraits the 70-200 f/2.8L USM and prime Canon EF 85mm f1.2 L II USM Lens. Outdoors for landscape I favour EF 16-35mm f/4L lens and 24-105 f/4L. For landscape always carry Lee filters and mainly user ND Grads + polariser.

Feedback

Go with the flow, adjust pose and lighting to capture plenty of variety. Often working with a tripod allows time to fine-tune pose and lighting - often I find small changes to these are significant. Softboxes fitted with egg crates can provide better control to avoid light spillage.
