Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at night on the front porch of my home in Kennesaw, GA

Time

It was late one evening several hours after sunset. Street lights were on but there was no streetlight in front of my home. I happened to step out onto my front porch only to be greeted by a giant web that covered the entire opening of two columns. I was amazed at the sheer size of the web and the spider within it. From where I stood I could see the web being backlit by one of the streetlights in the distance.

Lighting

Lighting played a very big role in the capture of this image. Since it was dark there was no light reflecting on the spider or the web from the front and only distant streetlights reflecting from behind and only at certain angles. The porch light illuminated the entire web, spider, and objects that were not of visual significance to the image and were undesirable at best. I decided to use a cell phone light since that gave off just the right amount of light for the proper depth of field that I wanted. The cell phone light was the only light used for this image and the use of a little longer exposure to add for additional lighting.,

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 camera on a tripod, cell phone flashlight, ladder to get up high enough and get at the right angle

Inspiration

I have a love for all things in nature. I especially love to take photos of insects and bugs typically using a maco so that their features are distinct and visible. I wasn't able to use a maco in this instance but I still wanted to get an image that displayed the features of the spider well.

Editing

I did do some post-processing to get the web to illuminate more so that it stood out more in the image. This meant decreasing the shadows in the background somewhat as well as increasing the hi-lights.

In my camera bag

I carry quite a bit of equipment in my bad so much so that I turned a small rolling suitcase into my camera bag. It includes the following: D7000 Nikon camera with 18-105 lens Tripod 600mm lens 300mm lens 50mm lens 40mm lens extension tubes Fisheye lens lens filters battery flash charger remote

Feedback

The only advice I can give to anyone trying to capture something similar is to have patience, to be safe, and know what kind of image you are trying to create. This was a very time-consuming shot. Thank God the model was patient and held still. Lighting was so low and holding the cell phone while trying to get the camera settings right to take the image was a feat in itself. Plus being on a ladder while using a tripod was tedious and could have been disastrous. The shot was well worth it for me. Know what you want to achieve and go after it.
