Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while visiting my daughter in Pueblo West, CO. The weather there is very erratic at times with wind storms of up to 60+mph winds, sudden rainstorms, and frequent rainbows. In addition, CO is very flat with little vegetation or trees to hinder a great image. You can literally see for miles in every direction.

Time

As with most photographers, you want to get the best image with the best lighting. I had already taken some photos during the morning hours and it was now heading towards sunset hour. It was around 6:30 p.m. on June 13th when I was driving down random streets waiting for what I had hoped would be an amazing sunset. I was scouting out an interesting structure or subject in the direction of where the sun would be setting. I started to see a very dramatic change in the weather with the clouds rolling in rather quickly and changing from the billowy light grey to a more threatening dark ominous grey, almost black. This to me was exciting so I took a position on the street and watched the storm build. I took this shot at 7:05 p.m.

Lighting

Typically for a shot of this nature with natural light, I would have shot at F11 based on the distance from my subject matter. However, because of the decrease in light due to the dark clouds, I reduced my f-stop to F7.1 leaving my ISO at 100 to obtain the best image quality I could under the circumstances.

Equipment

The camera I used is a Nikon D7000. I did not use a tripod nor flash for this image. I always have Polarizer on my lens partly to protect my lens as well as to regulate light into the lens.

Inspiration

I love the dramatic scenery of nature. It's challenging to catch dramatic scenes in nature because they are sometimes unexpected and can happen when you are least prepared for them. To capture an image as it unfolds is a special moment in the life of the person behind the camera. An image that makes the viewer feel the same intensity as you saw it when you took the image to me, is the best image you can create.

Editing

Because of the dark ominous clouds and the mood that I wanted the image to reflect I decided to edit it in black and white. I tend to spend a little more time editing in black and white to get the degrees of darks and lights just right. It's very important to get the tonal ranges right in order for the image to have the proper depth.

In my camera bag

I have a multitude of equipment that I carry, so much so that I created my own equipment carrier. I used a carry-on luggage bag on wheels. I cut foam and molded it to hold my lenses, each in its own compartment. and used another thick piece to separate the top from the bottom. In this bag, I am able to carry my camera, 4 lenses, filters, battery, charger, remote flash, eyeglasses, and misc items. In the back pouch, I carry my tripod.

Feedback

If you like interesting weather photos check the weather reports to see if there may be any storms happening in the area. Most of the time there is no real way to plan ahead to prepare to catch an image like this. If you see an interesting weather pattern happening try and take advantage of it. Other than that be prepared at all times in the event that something unexpected does occur. I always carry all of my equipment just about every time I leave the house. Seems the one time you don't something spectacular happens and you've missed the shot.
