Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken through my kitchen window in double blinds. I live in a small hamlet called Hedgesville in West Virginia. I have a Masters Degree in Art but my passion is Photography! I have been a freelance photographer in the candid arena for a few years. I have mostly done sports and special events and recently began taking pictures of nature.

Time

This photograph was probably in the afternoon as that is when the sun comes over to the back of my home. You can actually see the casts of the blinds on the sides, because of the lens it looks like the outside area. This was a difficult picture because of the glass and the blinds I was maneuevering the lens between. The birds are very shy of the camera!

Lighting

This is all natural light I had a great lens on I believe it was mt Nikon 70-200 F , 2.8. It's a very heavy lens and I did this hand held.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D750, this is a great camera for mostly any subjects. You can shoot with DX or F lens which is nice too. I am not sure If I used the 70- 200, 2.8F. Or my Nikon 28-300, which is much more variable in the F stops. These are both good lenes. I do not have a huge store of equipment as I am just an amateure photographer.

Inspiration

I just began taking photos of avains about two years ago when robins started nesting above my front door. I love all animals and watched them nest and then hatch, feed and fly away was a wonderful experience. This summer I had Barn Swallows nest above my front door, who knew, birds love me! I have 4 HUGE inside cats good thing for these birds! Watching these tiny creatures again was amazing, the pics I got were not bad either. Then I started feeding in my back yaerd and took some photos through the windows.

Editing

The only thing I do is enlarge as a general rule. I like the natural photos. I do not enhance my photos.

In my camera bag

I have my D750 I use pretty much all the time. I do have a Nikon 5500 as a back up. My lens are the 70-200 F2.8 28-300, variable, Nikon. I also have a 20mm wide angle, and a 16mm.

Feedback

In taking bird photos, It's all about patience and a lot of it! You do need some decent equipment, when I look at some of the photos out there they look like National geographic to me! It's nice If you can be outside, I am general stuck behind glass and far from my subject here. Most bird photogs ar in the fiels with big lenses and such!
