Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo of Christina Jones and Bill May In their gold medal performance at the premier of the FINA World Synchronized Swimming Mixed- Duet Technical Championships in Kazan, Russia, June of 2015.

Time

This event was held in the evening at the FINA World Aqua Area. We were seated very high up in the audience and every thing was quite dark except over the natatorium where the competitors were performing.

Lighting

The only lighting available was directly above the athletes, which thankfully was pretty good. These synchronized swimmers have many quick and dynamic movements and it’s difficult to catch these while using the long lenses needed and low level of light avaiable.

Equipment

I had just purchased my Nikon D 750, which works well in low light. I also had my Nikon 28-300 lens for all my shots, water, awards, scoreboard! Flash from my distance was impossible, and I used my camera handheld, proped on my knees.

Inspiration

I was a synchronized competitor for years and then a coach for 14 years. In 1989, Bill May, joined my team, the Syracuse Synchrocats. He became the first male Age Group U.S.Synchro swimmer. By the time he was 12 he was a young champion, and if it was not for rules at The Olympic level, he would have been there long ago. Bill has inspired a host of men around the World as well as girls in this most difficult, and wonderful sport!

Editing

I am what I consider to be a photojournalist photographer, a realist. I generally do not do anything to change my photographs unless there are real issues with the lighting or color for some reason beyond my control.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D 750, 5500. lenses; Nikon 28-300, Nikon F2.8 70-200, 50mm, Nikon 20 mm. Two tripod, one double head, couple small bendable tripods. Nikon

Feedback

You need something that works in low light and a good long lens. I know the sport of Synchronized Swimming and in this instance it really helped me as I had never seen the routine but as I understand how the music works withe the routines, I anticipated the action. Knowing your subject matter is key. This was a peak experience for me and something I will always cherish!
