Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Auxier Ridge Trail at the Red River Gorge geological area in Kentucky.

Time

This photo was taken around 8 am.

Lighting

This was my first time at the Red River Gorge. So I really didn’t know how much time the hike was going to take, all I knew it’s that I live 2 hours away and that the sunrise will be at 6:38am. Which means that the foggy conditions will only last a few minutes before the sun hits the valley. So I woke up at 4, got there as fast as I could and I got lost! I was on the road underneath the road I was supposed to be! So I drove to the closest gas station and the lady that works there she reoriented me in the proper direction. Once I got to the proper head trail, I ran as fast as I could to get positioned. It was worth every single minute.

Equipment

That’s 3 images stitched together. I still haven’t gotten a wide lens. I used a canon 5D Mark IV and the only and only lens I own, and 85mm 1.8. Nothing else.

Inspiration

I love hiking trails and I love the fall. This year I have more time to hike and photograph and since I didn’t have any commitments that day I just woke up and went for it.

Editing

Yes, like I said I had to stitched the images together, and then I applied a gradient map that I have customized myself to help pop the light a tiny bit more. But if I show you the raw images. There is no much post processing. I like to keep it close to the original.

In my camera bag

For me it’s just these two, my Canon 5D and the 85mm.

Feedback

If you want to get cool photos you have to sacrifice comfort. You will sometimes have to wake up early in the morning, or stay to watch the sunset even though that will mean you walk the trail back in the dark. It will be worth it though, I promise you that!
