Location
This photo was taken on a trip to the South of France and shows the Marina and old fort in Antibes, with the mountains behindTime
I knew that this image would work as soon as I saw the view - it was taken in late afternoon, and hand held. I thought that the light was perfect.Lighting
Beautiful spring lighting: no additional lighting was required. The late afternoon sun was highlighting the reflections of the boats, as well as the clouds over the mountains to the rear of the image.Equipment
This was taken quite early in my digital photography journey: it was taken with a Canon 550d and an 18-200mm kit lens which just goes to prove that you don't need expensive glass (although I have, now!)Inspiration
I wanted to give the flavour of the harbour at Antibes: the modern boats in the foreground with the old fort behind: a contrast between old and new. I also liked the way that the light was falling on the mountains behind the scene.Editing
This image is actually a re-edit, as I've learned more about photography and editing I've gone back to some of my earlier images. This was re-processed in Lightroom but very little was required: I set the image type as Landscape and Daylight, applied an increase in contrast and clarity, a lift of the shadows and a dehaze gradient filter was applied over the sky and the water to enhance the reflections. In my camera bag
My kitbag has changed a great deal since I took this image. My current favourite camera is the full-frame Canon EOS R and for general walk-around purposes I'll pack a 24-105 f4 and the 50mm f1.4. If I'm shooting a music festival or a wedding, then I'll obviously pack the full kit: a second body (Canon 5d mk3) with all lenses at f2.8 or below - a 24-70 and 70-200 being the main workhorses, with an 85mm f1.8 for detail work.Feedback
For travel photography, it's always worth planning your visit so that you're shooting when the light is best: early morning or late afternoon and into the golden hour, or even at night.
