I was running a pop-up studio for a craft fair - family portraits and so on, in a very sunny Town Hall with sun pouring the skylights and a white background. This gentleman came in and wanted something "dramatic" so I shot this. Apparently it wasn't dramatic enough for him because he didn't want it!

Location
This image was taken in my mobile studio during a craft fair a few years ago.Time
This was taken mid-afternoon.Lighting
The lighting set up for this was very difficult: I was in a room by the side of the stage with a white backdrop, and the sun was pouring in through the sky lights so when this gentleman came in for a portrait and asked for a "dramatic" picture it took me a little while to get this! It was lit with 2 studio lamps with him sitting away from the background to throw it into shade.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 7D Mk 1 and a 50mm f1.8 and 2 studio lights. I got in quite close to him, with reduced lighting to his face.Inspiration
The customer had wanted something very dramatic: almost like the album cover "from the Beatles", but I explained that in the lighting conditions we had it would be quite difficult! I put as much light as I could on the side of his face closest to me to try to reduce the light on the other side.Editing
This was processed in Lightroom: a standard red filter and high contrast black and white. I also reduced highlights and darkened the blacks. No sharpening was required! In my camera bag
My equipment depends on what I'm shooting: whether it's going to be a band, a portrait or a wedding! I've now upgraded to the Canon 5d Mk 3, so that's always in the bag, along with a flash gun, a Gary Fong Lightsphere and if it's a portrait shoot a 24-105mm f4 lens. For music photography, I'll probably have a 50mm f1.4 and the 70-200 f2.8 but no flash.Feedback
Lighting was crucial to this image, as was the post-processing. To get the dark effect the subject was brought as far away from the background as was possible in the limited space available, and I stood quite close to him. The ambient lighting was bright, so I reduced the flash power.
