Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo outside a florist shop located in Merrickville, the Victorian village in which we live. About a 45-minute drive from Ottawa, Canada's capital, Merrickville is a popular destination for day-trippers. And its shop owners take great pride in "dressing up for the occasion," whatever that occasion or holiday may be.

Time

This image was taken on October 20, 2020 at 12:59 pm.

Lighting

I remember there were intermittent clouds in the sky. On first focusing in on this image the sky was overcast. I strolled down the street, then returned about 15 minutes later. As it turned out, it was sunny when I returned. I took a few pictures without any artificial lighting, before the clouds reappeared.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS 1300D. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I was immediately struck by this storefront display. It was organic, simple, yet seemingly thoughtfully created. During this time of year there are always a lot of pumpkin displays. But this one, I thought, seemed a bit out of the ordinary. The eyes hinted at Halloween coming up, but did not overpower or draw away from the display.

Editing

This image was enhanced with HDR; the picture was also cropped to eliminate some sidewalk and signage, on the right, which I thought would detract from my intended focus.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon EOS 1300D, telephoto and wide angle lens and some filters in my bag.

Feedback

As an amateur photographer I am reticent to offer technical advice to my fellow ViewBug members. What I do know is that there are certain symbols, objects or images that epitomize specific occasions or holidays. Pumpkins personify fall and harvest season. Photographs - like those of a pumpkin - often appeal to us because we can relate to those images and we attach meaning and memories to them. As photographers we can enhance that appeal by adding some new perspective to those familiar images we capture.
