The Hernense Molen is a belt flour mill and owes its name to the earthen wall that is built around the base of the mill: the 'belt'. From the earthen wall, the miller has good access to the tail and the fled to place the sails in front of the blades.
Two recesses have been made in this wall, these are the so-called entrances. Via these inlets, horse and cart could drive into the mill to unload sacks of grain or to load the sacks with flour. The lower part of the mill is thus located in the belt and can also be used as a grain storage.
