Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Deoria Tal, Uttarakhand, India. It is a lake about 3 kms (easy trek) from the village Sari.

Time

I along with my friend finished the trek of about 3 kms and reached this beautiful place by late evening. We were late because of heavy rain in between the trek and we had to take shelter to avoid getting wet. We camped overnight and then the first thing I did was to take my camera and click pictures. It was a cloudy morning (may be around 7am) when I clicked this picture after trying few different angles and compositions.

Lighting

I am a hobbyist and self taught photographer. I wasn't aware of the proper techniques and best possible settings to use during certain lighting conditions and had never tried HDR as well. As previously mentioned, it was a cloudy morning when I clicked this photo. Result was not up to the mark and what not that I expected. The sky was almost completely white and without any definition :(

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon D5300 with an 18-55mm lens. I used a tripod as there was not enough light.

Inspiration

I love nature and try to capture anything and everything which I like. I had seen many beautiful images of sea and lakes on social media which were my inspiration for this shot. And when I saw the tree trunk in the lake I knew this is going to be something interesting.

Editing

Yes, without it I wouldn't even dared to post this picture here. I have a habit of learning new things esp. in post production. I would like to mention two names here (Serge Ramelli and Kelvin Pimont) because of whom I managed to fix the sky (using Photoshop) and improve my output in almost all my photos. I took their free masterclass and learned few tips and tricks from them. The main problem in my photo was the dull background (sky) which I replaced with an interesting sky image. The result is in front of your eyes :)

In my camera bag

Basic equipment in my camera bag which I always carry are: my only camera Nikon D5300, 18-55mm and 50mm prime lens which is amazing for portraits and in low light. In addition to these I do not forget to carry a spare memory card and an extra battery. Rest all other things depends on where I am going and what I plan to shoot.

Feedback

The most basic thing is one should know the conditions and the camera settings well to use in those conditions. In landscape photography, it is always good to have a tripod, ND filter (esp. for long exposures) and some knowledge of post processing (Photoshop and Lightroom) which dramatically improves your final output. Using post processing I managed to bring a dull image to life.
