Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a park which is about 3 Kms away from my home. I recently bought my first macro lens (Sigma 105 mm) so, went outside to try and capture beautiful macro shots inspired by some lovely macro shots (flowers and insects) of other photographers.

Time

I remember waking up around 5:30 am. Had already planned to go to park to try my new macro lens. I woke up early in the morning because I was very excited to try my new gear (Sigma 105 mm). Then I took my car and went straight to my planned location (which is a park about 3 Kms away from my home). That was beautiful morning with cool breeze. My plan was to capture close up shots of flowers. This shot was actually like icing on the cake :) I had never dreamed of clicking this type of shot.

Lighting

Umm.. I reached the park at about 6 am and had already spent an hour or so capturing different varieties of flowers. Lighting was not any issue at that time with enough sunlight on a partially cloudy morning. This was purely experimental shot, I wasn't expecting it to come out really well as I was just trying my hand on my new macro lens. When I saw the output on my laptop, I was pretty amazed with the shot :)

Equipment

This was shot on my only camera Nikon D5300 (handheld), with newly purchased Sigma 105 mm macro at /4.5. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I used to check out photos of other photographers and I realised that I was quite attracted towards macro shots. Loved the detailing of those macro photographs. So, decided to get myself a macro lens to try new things. Flowers were the only subject I had in my mind as I never expected in my wildest dream that I would be able to capture a flying bee carrying a small petal in her hands and flying towards flower. This was just my lucky day. I was clicking close up of a flower when I saw this lil honey :) flying here and there. That's when I planned to work on capturing the behavior of the bee. Output was amazing to me not sure about pros out there as I am just a newBEE in this field :)

Editing

I am not a professional in photography and post processing. But yes, I did do some post processing on this particular shot using Lightroom. A little bit exposure correction, enhancing clarity and a bit of saturation as well.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5300 and my 50 mm prime lens are always in my camera bag. Along with a spare battery and an extra memory card. Otherwise it depends where I am going or what I plan to capture. Apart from 50 mm lens I also have basic kit lens (18-55 mm), a macro (Sigma 105 mm) and a bazooka.. LOL which is Tamron 150-600 mm.

Feedback

All you need is patience and a bit of luck to capture this kind of shot. You can't really judge the behavior of insects such as honey bee's e.g. you wouldn't know which flower they would like to sit on etc. So, my advice would be have patience and keep looking for moments. :)
