Behind The Lens

Location

After a day a driving, I stopped for the night in Ft. Smith, AR. I found a great park sitting right on the Arkansas River. As the sun was setting, I made sure I was in the park to capture not only the sunset, but the beauty of this park at the end of the day. For this shot, I was up on a hill overlooking the river. I saw the walker coming and waiting for the moment to capture this silhouette.

Time

Sunset - end of the day. This is a great time to shoot when there is water nearby.

Lighting

I love back-lit shots. Sunsets offer the opportunity to share shapes and textures without converting to black-and-white. In other words, it's black-and-white in a color world. But the color will often offer an extra punch that black-and-while will not.

Equipment

I shoot with a Fuji EX-2 with an 18-135mm zoom. EXIF data tells me that this was shot at a 37mm, 1/500th, f/5.6, ISO 800.

Inspiration

The back-lighting with the reflection of the sun upon the river.

Editing

Absolutely. Back-lit photos usually require some adjustment of the exposure and levels. In this instance, I believe I pulled the exposure down by about 1/2 stop to enrich the colors and insure that the trees were solid black.

In my camera bag

I carry my Fuji EX-2 and primarily use my 18-135mm zoom. However, I also carry a 12mm Samyang for those ultra wide shots. In a throw back, I have a Nikor 50mm f/1.4 from the mid sixties with a Fuji to Nikon adapter. I use this primarily for close-up (almost macro) shots.
