After a nice rain, I took my camera out to visit the flora outside our rented condo in the north Georgia mountains. I mounted my 60 year old Nikkor 50 mm lens on my Fuji mirrorless to capture this image.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on vacation. This rose was outside our condo rental in Helen, GA. I photographed it right after a nice rain shower.

Time

This was shot on a Sunday afternoon.

Lighting

Lighting was just a cloudy day. It was perfect in offering a soft tone for photographing flowers and capturing subtle colors.

Equipment

I used a Fujifulm X-E1 with an old Nikkor lens attached. I have a 50mm, f/1.4 manual focus lens which dates back to the mid 1960’s. While it is totally manual — exposure and focusing — it offers amazing sharpness and with a close-up lens attached helps to make astounding macro shots. The Fuji camera offers me amazing color rendition including the chance to mimic favorite Fuji Films of old.

Inspiration

Beauty. After the rain, I could not resist the opportunity to find and photograph the beauty of God’s creation.

Editing

Yes, there was post processing. Not only did I deepen the color, I cropped the image to a square format, and then added a deep vignette to focus the eye on the rose.

In my camera bag

I carry my Fujfilm X-E1, which I love, and three lenses. I have the Fuji 24-135mm zoom. Although it is a bit heavy, it is versatile and sharp. It is also my only completely automatic lens. I have a Rokinon 12mm manual lens for super wide shots and, as mentioned before, my old Nikkor 50mm, f/1.4. I also carry a Vivitar flash, a successor to the old 283, but made for an automatic camera. It’s made for Nikon, but will operate in a more manual mode like the 283/285 series.

Feedback

Use lots of patience and make lots of exposures. This is one of about 10 shots of this rose.
