This is one of many limestone fenceposts along "Post Rock Country" in Kansas. Due to a lack of trees, early settlers improvised and used the readily available limestone to build fences and buildings for their newly established homesteads. Limestone was readily available in the area and soft enough to shape when freshly quarried and hardened when exposed to air, allowing the early settlers to fence and farm their homesteads.
