Behind The Lens

Location

Through the window by my desk at my workplace.

Time

Mid-morning, when the light was mellow.

Lighting

This tree stood in shade with only the slender branch with the young leaves catching the sun's rays, contrasting against the mature green leaves of the giant tree.

Equipment

Canon Powershot SX 400 IS.

Inspiration

This tree affords a lot of shade from the harsh sunlight of the summer. Until noon, the shade is dense then the strong sunlight begins to creep in, bleaching the greenery. As I was working at my desk, engrossed in my work, I happened to look out through the window briefly. The slender branch bowed with the weight of the newly emerging leaves caught my eye. The pigment of the young leaves caught the right amount of sunlight and was a natural contrast to the dense green foliage of the mature tree, which was gradually being lighted up by the sun slowly creeping across the sky. I knew I had to capture the moment and took the shot.

Editing

Just the usual. I improved the contrast, adjusted the colours a little to make the new leaves stand, and that's about it.

In my camera bag

Canon Powershot SX 400 IS. I carry it everywhere with me.

Feedback

I have slowly learnt by being in Viewbug and trial and error that the right kind of light is a very important factor for those who are taking outdoor shots like me. In the absence of advanced equipment or being "in the right place at the right time" and when camping out in locations for shoots is not conducive or cannot be undertaken, observation allows one to get the right kind of light for a particular shot. It's easy with stationary objects, just wait for the sun to go this way or that or be hidden by the clouds. Or take shots during dawn and dusk, if possible. Since my camera is a point and shoot, the photos are very grainy if I take them in low light. I try to take them either before noon or after 4 PM. Always of course that's not possible since moving objects, like birds, butterflies and animals will not wait for me. So I seize the moment and try and position myself to have the light working to my advantage. In any case, I am still learning.
