Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my back porch when it was absolutely raining buckets outside! The rain was running off the roof of my car port and it filled up this bucket, splashing all over the place.

Time

As I recall this was taken on a Summer afternoon in August. We had a thunder storm come through with torrential rain mixed with wind. When it was over the sun came back out in full force, like nothing had happened!

Lighting

The main thing about the lighting on this was as the rain still poured, the sun shined through from the distance just enough to create the "rainbow effect" reflecting off on the water on that section.

Equipment

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T5, and the lens I used was a 75-300 mm zoom lens. I did not use a flash or tripod. I just steadied my elbows on the porch railing and zoomed in on the bucket, which was several yards away.

Inspiration

I love summer rains and thunderstorms, but this one was phenominal because it was coming down so hard, the sound on my metal roof was almost deafening! I wanted to capture how much it was really raining, and all of the directions it was going. This is not easy to do! I spotted that bucket at the corner of my carport and saw the water splashing high up out of it. I thought that might be a good way to capture the power of the rain coming down. I used the longest lens I have because it was a distance away, and started snapping while on my back porch, sheltered from the worst of the downpour.

Editing

I was really amazed at the clarity of the capture when I pulled it up on my computer for post processing. I sharpened it a little more and cropped it in. I also adjusted the saturation and colors to be more brilliant to show the rainbow colors from the sun's reflection. Those were there naturally, but when I enhanced the vibrance, it really brought some fun and diversity to the photo. The black in the background is actually my car in the carport, but the rain was so torrential, it was just a blur in the background!

In my camera bag

I keep my camera and lenses in my bag, along with accessories like cleaning cloths, rain cover for my camera, an extra battery and charger, etc. Depending on what I'm shooting or where I'm going I might pull some stuff out of my bag to lighten the load, or put them in a smaller bag. My lens collection is growing, so it's getting a little heavy to keep everything in there and haul it around.

Feedback

My advice is to try new challenges and keep taking lots of photos. Even of things you think will turn out right. Keep your camera ready to go at all times, and go for it! Watch your lighting, try different camera settings and angles, and watch for good composition. Don't worry about what you've got until you pull it up for post processing. I have had more surprises than I can count from sessions that I thought were terrible and there were no good photos. Experiment and be adventurous in post processing until you bring out the best in the photo. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box, and most of all, have fun!!
