Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph in Cherokee, NC.

Time

I shot this early in the morning. I left my house at 5:00 am and arrived in Cherokee, NC. between 6-7:30 am. When I arrived the elk were grazing in a field to my right. I pulled over and grabbed my camera and started shooting along with everyone else who was there. The lighting wasn't that great when I first got there, I shot for about 5 minutes before the sun broke through the trees and bathed the elk in that beautiful early morning sunlight.

Lighting

I wanted the elk to look like they were just out grazing in the early morning sun. I had to wait for a while for the sun light to break through the trees, but, I believe it was worth it. If there is one thing I can say to photographers out there it is patients. A lot of photography involves waiting some situations out. You can be waiting for lighting or a certain movement, the wind to settle down. There are a number of things you may have to wait for. I have seen photographers give up on a situation and the minute they walk away what they were waiting for came to pass and they missed out on being able to capture the photo because they didn't have the patients to wait the situation out.

Equipment

I shot this photograph with a Nikon Coolpix B500. I shot it hand held because I was moving around a lot trying to get as many shots as I could before the elk finished eating and went back into the woods.

Inspiration

I had been trying to get some shots of the elk around Cherokee, NC. But, timing just hadn't been on my side. So, I planned this trip with photographing the elk as my main mission. I shot the elk early in the morning and shot a lot of other things in the area throughout the day.

Editing

I really didn't have to do much to this photograph except bring out the greens. The morning sun light pretty much did my job for me.

In my camera bag

I usually have which ever cameras I choose to shoot with that day. Camera cleaning equipment, battery packs, extra SD cards, bottled water, snacks and a first aid kit. I keep my tripod in the car incase I need it for a shoot.

Feedback

Like I said earlier, patients. Especially when you are trying to capture wild life because you never know what they are going to do. Plus, be well aware of your surroundings for an exit plan because a beautiful, calm, serene moment can turn in to a bad situation in seconds if that animal turns on you. They say keep a safe distance between you and the animals for a reason !!
