Photo I took of a pelican that had just finished an unsuccessful attempt to catch a fish in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve near Huntington Beach, California. I was intrigued by the expression in the pelican's upturned eyes, as if s-he was thinking, "Damn! ! I just missed catching one that time!" I was lucky also to capture the spread wings and the water splash as the pelican rises from the bay. The contrasting colors of the bird against the water added to this especially interesting and vivid image.
