The foam bug, also called spit bug or foam cicada ( Philaenus spumarius ), is an insect that belongs to the suborder Cicadas (Auchenorrhyncha). It is also the most common and best-known cicada in the Netherlands. The body length is about 5 to 7 millimeters, the color is brown to brown-gray with sometimes lighter spots. The larvae are pale green to yellow and live in a foam nest known to the general public as a cuckoo spit .
