Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio here in Baltimore, Maryland. Like many others, I am a self-thought photographer. I love creating new images to see the results. My studio is also self-made in an area of my basement.

Time

Because I love daylight shooting this picture was shot early in the morning while playing with my camera. I had organized a set of designs that tough would make a great picture. Not once did I think this design would win a contest. After seeing some of the outstanding work of one of the members of Viewbug I made up my mind to try creating my own layout for a picture. This is only one of the designs I loved.

Lighting

When working on designs for shooting lighting becomes a key factor. using the digital view on my camera I played around with the lighting. I am new to the digital camera so at that time I was no sure about the lighting. Don't be shy when it comes to playing around with your camera. Play with the f stop as well. By play with designs and your camera, you will surprise yourself when you shot.

Equipment

This picture was shot with my Canon ESO 4000 D using a stander lens and tripod. I use a flash as well but the shutter speed was very low. At the time I was playing with the shutter to see what I would get. By using a low shutter speed I was able to create a clear image of the colors in the wheel. I place my lights a little above the wheel also.

Inspiration

I saw a few pictures here on Viewbug and ask myself how they were done. The special effect people use here are very powerful and push me to try new things when shooting. At the time I was recovering from knee surgery and missed going out to shot, so I started searching Viewbug for somethings I could do at home. When I came across a group of special effect pictures by one of the well-known photographers here on Viewbug I was moved to try creating my own designs and shot them. I must say Viewbug is a good place to get inspired.

Editing

At the time I knew very little about post-processing so I did not use it. Now I use photoshop to edit my work.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pick up when packing my bag is my Canon ESO 4000 D and my 300mm lens. I carry a 70mm zoom lens as well as a wide-angle lens. But I use my 300mm lens more these. I always make sure I have a strong tripod to support my lens. Because I do very little night shooting I don't take a flash often. Yes, there are times when I need a flash, but I use the built-in flash on my camera.

Feedback

Always be willing to learn and play with your camera, try using the polarizing filter, and play with the lighting using different objects even when shooting water. The more you play around with your camera the better you become at using speed, the f stop, more. Never stop asking how did they do that and be willing to try it for yourself.
