Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my front yard early in the morning. This is one of my first digital pictures

Time

I am just learning to shoot digital, so I try to shoot early in the morning before the sun is too bright and I use the wrong setting. I shoot most of my flowers from about 7:00 to 8: 30 in the morning. Lately, I shot a few flowers after 6:00 pm. I n the Summer is the best time for me to shoot pictures of Flowers. Because there are so many beautiful colors to capture.

Lighting

My goal is to capture the flower without the background fully in focus. To me low to low sunlight is great for this. I don't know that much about lighting and digital pictures so each picture is a learning experience. Because I shoot manual lighting is something I must learn. Even when you are editing pictures the level of light affects the outcome of your work. I have lost a lot of good shots due to overexposure. I used the push and pull format with film back in the day. But this does not work with digital images.

Equipment

This was shot with the Canon EOS 4000D using a 70-300mm lens without the use of a tripod.

Inspiration

I am a great lover of Flowers from Asia and the Hawaiian island and learned about them. I have four different colors of Asian in my front yard, So this summer when the began to bloomed I captured them from beginning to the end of the cycle. It was hard to get this picture because I am learning to shoot digital using the manual setting. The first few shots were underexposed, a few days later I learned to use the open viewer to see my shot before I take them. This helped me see the image, but I did not know about the wheel on my camera that allows me to open or close the aperture without having to go into the setting. It has been fun teaching myself how to use this camera. Unlike my old Pentax K 1000, I don't have to develop a roll of film to see the errors made.

Editing

For this picture, there was very little that needs to change.

In my camera bag

The first lens to go into my case is my 70-300mm lens. I love this lens and would be lost without it. I shoot a lot of nature pictures and this lens allows me to stand off and capture the shots I want. When shooting wildlife I need to be a good distance from the subject. My 70-300mm allows this. Next, I make sure that I have a good tripod to support my camera. Because the camera shakes when using my 300mm lens I place it on the tripod to stabilize it. Right now I don't have a backup battery for my camera, but that would be one of the main things to go in my bag. I don't know how many times I have a great shot and my better was dead. It is a very sad feeling to miss out on a shot.

Feedback

I would say before you try to take a picture like this know as much as you can about your camera. This will help you not to go through what I went through to get this picture. Never forget to check your old notes, If you don't take notes please start taking them you be glad you did when it comes to taking the same shot later.
