I took this photo while I was spending time at a photo workshop at a ranch in Montana.Time
This photo was taken in the afternoon, usually not a good time because of the harsh sunlight. But the day had clouded over, giving us some nice light for shooting the beautiful horses at the ranch.Lighting
Like I mentioned, the sky had clouded over and gave us some nice light for shooting these beautiful animals.Equipment
I use a Sony A99II, and for this photo I was hand holding as the action was just too fast to be using a tripod. I had my Tamron 28-300 lens on my camera, as it is 95% of the time.Inspiration
I was standing in a field with a group of 15 photographers at the ranch. The cowgirls, that work there, would round up the horses and chase them towards us, so we could photograph them running. It was a little scary as well as very exciting as they ran towards us and we were never quite sure if they were going to turn or come straight at us. When I took this photo, this horse had been at the back of the herd and came running by all by itself. I love horses and think they are the most beautiful animals, and with the larch trees all in yellow, it just made for some very pretty images.Editing
I usually go over all my images with a bit of contrast and detail and maybe do some cropping. In my camera bag
It depends on where I am going as to what I carry with me. I usually have my 28-300 lens on my camera, and will bring along a back up camera and a wider lens that is a 14-50 or if I am planning that there could be wildlife to shoot in the distance, then I will have along my 150-600 sigma lens. I keep a polarizor and a variable neutral density filter with me too. My tripod is a Sirui with a Manfrotto head.Feedback
my advice would be that for shots like this to practice using a fast shutter speed, if you want to stop the action and pan a bit as the subject moves past you. I can also say that if you like western type photos, this ranch in Montana is an excellent place to check out!
