I was spending a week of photography at the Bar W Guest Ranch, near Whitefish MT, last October when I took this photo. I love horses and they had 80 of them at the ranch for us to ride and take photos of.Time
For this photo, all of us photographers stood in a line in a field, and the wranglers chased the horses towards us. We did this 3 times, during different parts of the day. I liked this photo the best, with some soft late in the day light.Lighting
We were able to take photos like this, of the running horses, on three different occasions. I liked this one with the soft, late in the day lighting the best. I had never seen Tamrac trees before and the way they shown in the light, mixed in with the green of the evergreens was spectacularEquipment
I used my Sony A99II, with a Tamron 28-300 lens . All of us in the group just hand held our cameras, as the action was just too fast for using a tripod. You never knew which direction the horses might run!Inspiration
I love horses, and feel like there is no more beautiful animal on earth! So when the opportunity to photograph these running beauties happened, I was very happy.Editing
I did do some cropping of the photo and a little sharpening of the horses. The hardest part was sorting through the 1000 images I took that day and decide which ones to keep and which ones to delete. In my camera bag
I always travel with a second camera body, just in case my first one should develop a problem. The Tamron 28-300 is on my camera 90% of the time. I love the versatility of this lens. I also carry a Sony 16-50 with me for the wide angle shots that might arise. I carry polarizors and a split neutral density filter also for sky differences that might come along. And of course some micro fiber lens cloths and a dust blower. If I am going to be shooting some far away wildlife, I will also bring along my Tamron 150-600Feedback
For anyone who loves horses and wants a western experience, I can strongly recommend the photography week at the Bar W Ranch. Beautiful scenery, wonderful people, great accommodations, and delicious food. Just remember to bring along lots of card space, as you will need it to capture these running beauties!
