I took this photo while on a tour in Greenland. I got to spend a week on this 100 year old ship called the Donna Wood. It was an amazing experience as 12 of us and a crew of four traveled along among the glaciers and icebergs.Time
This photo was taken in the middle of the afternoon, on one of the later days on our trip. We had been looking for big icebergs like this to hopefully get this dream shot. And suddenly one appeared! Half of us on board suited up and went out in the zodiac to the other side of the iceberg so we could get photos of our ship through the archway. We then went back and the rest of the group went out and did the same. It was a very exciting and almost unreal experience--I still somedays can't believe I did this!Lighting
This was a cloudy day and I think that helped bring out the blue color in the ice and made the ship easy to photograph and not deal with shadows.Equipment
I was using my Sony A99II and the lens that I most often have on it is a Tamron 28-300. We all just handheld our cameras, as tripods don't work well in a moving boat. Lucky for us the water was rather calm that day. On this trip we were limited on the weight we could bring, for our small transport plane from Iceland to Greenland, so I could only bring what I thought I might need.Inspiration
During this week, I had taken many pictures of many icebergs and glaciers. So when this opportunity came us to get a picture of our ship with the iceberg, it was very exciting.Editing
For post processing I usually do some sharpening and straightening if needed and maybe add some contrast. In my camera bag
Besides my Sony A99II, I always bring along an older Sony camera body-just in case. Twice I have fallen while traveling and needed to resort to my second camera. I love the 28-300 lens for the wide range it covers. I also have with me a wider lens for when I need to get closer. I of course keep some lens clothes with me and a number of filters-including a polarizer and a graduated neutral density. My back can't handle a heavy camera bag, so I do try and travel light and only bring what I need.Feedback
Unfortunately this beautiful old ship is no longer sea worthy. I have heard, from a reliable source, that during covid no one took care of her and she kind of fell apart. This makes me very sad. But there are other companies to travel with to Greenland if you are interested in seeing many glaciers and icebergs.
