Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the edge of a wheat field just next to the road. It was late spring here in the north of Italy and the fields were still green.

Time

Late afternoon, but still too early for the golden hour. The light was not too harsh though, and shadows were already getting longer.

Lighting

It was a sunny day, but there is often some haze in this area of Italy, so the light became quite soft. I think that really enhances this scene.

Equipment

I used my Canon-6D with a EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 USM IS II. The wide aperture of this lens is perfect to create the smooth and blurred background. I took this shot handheld since there was plenty of light.

Inspiration

I love wild flowers. Spring is an amazing time to go out and take photos of the fields blooming. The poppies always attract me, and when I found this one together with the daisies, I knew it would make for a good photo.

Editing

I didn't do too much post-processing here. I changed the white balance a little to make the colours a bit warmer. I enhanced the clarity of the poppy slightly to make it jump out more. That's about all I did, it was already there in the image I took...

In my camera bag

My Canon-6D plus several lenses. A 16-35mm f/4 for wide angle shots, a 70-200mm f/2.8 longer shots and a 50mm f/1.8. I love the 70-200mm, it's an amazing lens. heavy, but incredibly good image quality. I usually carry a set of extension tubes to get really close to a subject. There's of course a ND filter for long exposures. Extra batteries and memory cards and that's about it. Of course I also carry a Sirui tripod with a sturdy ball head. I use it for most of my photography.

Feedback

When you go out to capture landscapes, keep an eye out for the smaller stuff, like flowers. The wide landscapes are beautiful, but once you've taken the photos you came for, look down close to you. There are often really interesting photo opportunities close by, if only we pay attention.
