I took this photo in Venezia next to the Palazzo Ducale. You're looking to one of the islands in front of the city, San Giorgio Maggiore.Time
We took this photo at sunrise, which in December was around 7.30 am. I joined a workshop with Rafael Rojas, who is a brilliant photographer and has such an intuition for composition. The sun had a hard time breaking through the clouds, and only managed to add a hint of colour to the sky.Lighting
Since it was still early, I didn't have to use an ND filter to make a long exposure. I made a few tries watching the histogram until I was satisfied.Equipment
I used a Canon-6D with an EF-24-105mm with a polarizer fitted. Of course I used a tripod, in my case a Sirui NX-3204 with a KX-40 ball head.Inspiration
I had seen photos like this before, but what can represent Venice better than gondolas? I wanted to create the contrast between the moving gondolas and the island with its church and tower in the background. This was probably the only photo I knew I wanted to take before coming to Venice, and I'm happy with the result.Editing
I did not do a lot with this photo. I made the usual corrections in Light room, like white balance, contrast, lens correction. I saturated the colours in the sky a little, and added sharpness to the buildings. In my camera bag
My Canon-6D with a 24-105mm f/4 and a 70-200mm f/2.8. A polarizer and a 10 stop ND filter. I also bring my tripod wherever I can.Feedback
Wake up early, cities can be amazingly quiet before sunrise. Take your time to look around when making photos. The gondolas where still all there as most tourists where still sleeping, when you come later some of them might be in use and there's also more traffic on the water.
