Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in a famous location in Namibia in Deadvlei. What's special about this place is that the trees that are standing here are dead for 6 to 8 centuries. Since it is so dry here the wood does not decay. The other thing is that this pan of white clay is surrounded by red sand dunes several hundreds of meters high.
Time
This was an hour or two after sunrise. Unfortunately with all the clouds there were no long shadows, but short before I was going to leave this place, the sun burst through the clouds. For a moment you could see the sun rays peaking through the cloud cover.
Lighting
Like I said it was cloudy this morning, so there were no shadows. But the sun rays provided that special touch that this photo needed. It's definitely not the photo many photographers come home with with a blue sky.
Equipment
I used my Canon-6D with a 24-105 mm f/4 lens and of course my Sirui tripod. I used exposure bracketing, so what you see is the result of 5 exposures.
Inspiration
I really had been hoping to capture the first sun rays, but as a photographer we have to work with the light that we get. I managed to get this photo because I sticked around long enough. This location is so much photographed that it's difficult to come back with something different. Thanks to the clouded weather I managed!
Editing
I took 5 exposures and put those together with Nik software. Tuning the result in Nik I created this surreal colours, which I think matches the atmosphere of the location. I did the final processing in Lightroom, but this was mainly for sharpening.
In my camera bag
My bag usually contains a Canon-&d and a Canon-90D. My lenses go-to are a 16-35mm f/4 and a 70-200mm f/2.8. I love the 70-200mm. It is so sharp. I use the 6D mainly for landscapes, and the 90D for wildlife. I love the extra reach the APS-C sensor gives me. Of course I have a polarizer and some ND filters in my bag and some extra batteries and memory cards.
Feedback
Go for your own vision of a place. It's good to watch for photos of other photographers from a certain location, since this helps you plan for a shoot, but try and get your interpretation of a location, not just a copy of someone else's photo.
