Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken in a city park in Seattle area. After photography, mycology is one of my hobbies. This park brings many different types of mushrooms every year and this year was very rich with this species. The tree where you see this cluster produced about 200 of mushrooms for 2 weeks

Time

I had multiple chances to photograph this mushroom cluster at different light and with different cameras. An overcast day at about 6 PM gave this soft, non-contrast light.

Lighting

Shoot from the bottom and avoid light from the sky. If shooting late, use artificial light; the simplest in such a situation could be your phone.

Equipment

This one was taken with a smartphone Nexus 6P. It gives you a perfect depth of field, especially in locations where you cannot use a tripod. I have some very sharp photos with it when there is enough light.

Inspiration

I just love photographing mushrooms. I did 4 or 5 attempts to make a perfect shot and this one worked the best

Editing

A color version of the photo also looks great, in my opinion. So I started with it. Then I realized its potential as a black and white. Sharpening and vignetting is all I did.

In my camera bag

It always depends where you go and what you're shooting. There is a big list I could include but it would not be relevant to the photo taken by a smartphone. If I don't have particular plans, I may carry Canon SX720 with 40x zoom for impulsive shots.

Feedback

It is very hard to take pictures in the woods, mostly because of high contrast. Avoid such scenes. Most pictures require a tripod. I don't say "It is a must" because this was taken without a tripod. The best times are morning, especially with fog, overcast days (don't include skies). Know the objects you'd like to photograph. Try different ways to get your perfect shot.
