Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in the Enchantments area in North Cascades National Park. The closest big city is Seattle. This area is very popular with photographers that come here every fall to enjoy crispy air and golden larches. The area is typified by rugged glaciated peaks and a series of lakes ranging from 4,400 feet to 7,800 feet in elevation. Due to the overwhelming popularity of this unique area, all visitors must obtain a permit if visiting from May 15 through October 31. The best time to see is about 3 weeks starting in the middle of September.Time
The photo was taken in relatively early hours, about 8 AM.Lighting
You want the sun to reach this place to "turn the light" on the larches. Further in the day, the light gets harsh resulting in very high contrast.Equipment
Surprisingly, you can get a perfect picture with a very simple camera or even a phone. I used Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 24-105mm lens.Inspiration
We have been to this area many times. This is like visiting a shrine. Every time is different. If you're here at the beginning of October, you can take this picture and in a week, you may not be able to get here because of the fresh snow.Editing
Nothing, really.In my camera bag
I'm more of a hiker than a photographer. Given the difficulty of the area (see below) it would be difficult to carry a lot of gear. So, it is Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 24-105mm lens (and, optionally, Canon 100-400mm).Feedback
Timing is very important. To be able to backpack to this area, you need to win a lottery. A day hike is also an option, but the round trip is 18 miles (shortest) and elevation gain is 4500 ft. We've done it both. Don't be afraid. You can do it.
