The photo was taken in Manama Bahrain. It was taken during a photo walk that we did in the Central Market at the start of 2018. These months are actually the prime period to do street photography as the weather here in Bahrain is just perfect to go outdoors.Time
This was taken around 8 in the morning, Saturday, January 20, 2018. I woke up around 5 am to prepare for this photo walk, I was really excited and anticipating this one since I've been wanting to do street shots around the market area. I know that I'll be able to experience and see a lot of things and meet new people just like this guy.Lighting
This was my first time doing it in the market area of Bahrain and since we started way early in the morning, it was purely ambient lighting Nothing but good ol' sunlight and just right place to take the shot. There were lots of warehouses there so I used it as well to cast a little bit of shadow on his face.Equipment
I shot this using my first camera to buy here in Bahrain which is the Nikon D3300 and it was handheld only. I brought this one at that time as I missed shooting with it plus its lighter than the D7000. I paired this with Nikkor 55-200 VR so I was a little bit far when I shot this, to be honest. I did this because we were shooting at a market and everyone was busy walking left and right. Me being a big guy, I had a difficult time squeezing in the crowd so that's why I opted to go zoom lens on this instead of using my 50mm.Inspiration
I always dreamt of becoming a Nat Geo photographer and one of the things that they do is to always do portraits or headshots in their cover. This is what inspired me to do this shot and actually any portrait shot that I'm doing. I'm always telling myself that I'll be a Nat Geo photographer someday and that my work will be chosen as one of its covers. This is like the fuel of my engine, so I always do my best to fulfill my dream even though it's just actually a dream...Editing
Yes, I did. I just basically used Snapseed to turn my photo black and white and just added a little contrast. In my camera bag
Normally, my go-to gears are my Nikon D7000 and the Nikkor 28-105 D (macro) because I find these two perfect for what I usually do. Other things in my bag are Nikkor 50mm which I usually use for portraits and to have that great bokeh effect. I also have a Nikkor 50-200mm VR just in case I needed a zoom lens and lastly a couple of filters just in case I needed to do long exposures. Oh, I almost forgot, extra MMC's and a JOBY gorilla pod.Feedback
For street portraits, before trying to take a picture of any subject you may like, try to always approach them first and ask permission. If they said yes, that's great at least you can really take a great shot because they will be more natural this way. But if they say no, then respect them and move on to the next subject that you can find. Don't be discouraged and just keep going until you find that "yes" again.
