also known as the Bahrain Fort or Portuguese Fort, is an archaeological site located in Bahrain. Archaeological excavations carried out since 1954 have unearthed antiquities from an artificial mound of 12 m (39 ft) height containing seven stratified layers, created by various occupants from 2300 BC up to the 18th century, including Kassites, Greeks, Portuguese and Persians. It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Qal'at al-Bahrain. It is one of Bahrain's heritage sites and was inducted in 2005 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. It was believed to be a trading port as well since when they excavated it, it revealed structures of different types from residential, public to commercial areas, even religious and military ones.

Time

This was taken around 8 in the morning, Saturday, February 8, 2020. This was the location for our Photo walk that was held by a local photographer's group. I was excited about this one since I've been wanting to go to this location but due to unforeseen circumstances I always ended up not being able to.

Lighting

This was my first time in the Fort and during that time I was astounded on how beautiful this walkway was. Since we started way early in the morning, the lighting here that was used is the best out there, and that is our Sun. It is purely natural light and I had to just really time it when the Sun was going west from where I was standing. I wanted it in a way that the shadows where diagonal to the arcs so that it would cover portions of it and also if people were walking by they would also be in the shadows as well. I was also waiting for a person to come by to add the missing element I needed to complete my composition.

Equipment

I shot this using my long time partner, the Nikon D7000 and it was handheld only. This is usually what I use partnered with a Nikkor 28-105 D lens. This is usually my go-to gears for photo walks as I find it very versatile in any situation, plus the macro function of the 28-105 is handy if ever I needed one.

Inspiration

My mom has been here in Bahrain for 28 years and we treat this as our second home. Growing up, my mom used to always tell about stories about the places to visit in Bahrain and one of them was this Fort. She said that it is a very historical and very important part of Bahrain's history. When there was a chance for us to visit her here, we always miss the chance of ever going there because we always end up doing other things. When I finally decided to stay here in Bahrain, I wasn't still able to go and see it since I was pre-occupied with work and other activities. Then when I had the time to visit it, they said that we had to have permission in order for us to take photos using a DSLR. That got me disappointed and told myself that there will be a chance for me to do this. Now fast forward to 2019, one of the local photographer's groups here held a special photo walk and this was the location. So I immediately signed up and voila, here is the shot that I have always wanted to do.

Editing

I didn't do that much except for the fact that I had to change it into black and white because it was the requirement of the contest and I also cropped the top portion because I noticed that it wasn't that balanced.

In my camera bag

Normally, as I've said in the earlier question, my go-to gears are my Nikon D7000 and the Nikkor 28-105 D (macro) because I find these two perfect for what I usually do. Other things in my bag are Nikkor 50mm which I usually use for portraits and to have that great bokeh effect, I also have a Nikkor 50-200mm VR just in case I needed a zoom lens and lastly a couple of filters just in case I needed to do long exposures. Oh, I almost forgot, extra MMC's and a JOBY gorilla pod.

Feedback

Hmm... Always do research on your location area especially if you have an idea where would it be and what time you'll go there. This is usually what I do so that I have the necessary equipment I need. Another advice is to learn how to be patient and be ready at all times especially in street photography like this because, to be honest, I waited a long time for a person to actually come by before I got the shot. I never moved in my location because I also know that I only have minutes if not seconds for a person to walk by, be late to act, you'll lose that opportunity.
