Location
This photo was taken at Cannon Beach, Oregon on a stormy January day.Time
Late afternoon, around 4:00 PMLighting
The sunset was completely behind the clouds, but then the clouds parted for just a few minutes and I got this shot.Equipment
Nikon D40 Sigma 50-500 F/6.3 1/250 ISO 200 No flash Tripod used with remote shutter release @330mmInspiration
It had been stormy and dark most of the afternoon and we were headed back to our cabin. I turned one last time just as the clouds parted. It was spectacular and inspiring to see the darkness of the ocean and clouds with the bright reds, oranges and yellows of the sun going down.Editing
This was early in my digital usage, but having shot 35mm for many years I try not to manipulate much. I dropped the exposure about 30% and may have pushed the vibrancy by about 15%. This picture was taken in 2008.In my camera bag
I now generally carry 2 bodies when in the field. Most often my D500 and D850. I always carry my 70-200 f/2.8, my 60mm macro, 85mm f/1.4 and if shooting landscapes my 14-25 f/2.8. When shooting birds or wildlife I pack my 300mm f/2.8 and my 500mm PFFeedback
Timing is everything. It was cold, wet and stormy but I just had a feeling that the clouds would part for a shot. I just had to find a spot and wait it out.
