This is Milka, chocolate German pointer, and one of the dogs I sit from time to time. Her eyes are so expressionable, I just love their golden colour! During the last time I spent time with her, I brought my camera and this came to be.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my Vancouver home, while I was having missy over for a day... Before all the "complications". I've been doggysitting ever since my own girl was taken from me prematurely - almost two years ago - as it was the only way I was able to deal with losing her.

Time

Not sure what time of the day, probably late afternoon. She's a very energetic lass so we spent most of it walking and playing, and I lose track of time when I'm with dogs. :)

Lighting

I wanted to - figuratively - make her eyes pop. I love how golden, expressive and lively they are!

Equipment

My Nikon D750 and "nifty fifty" :)

Inspiration

I'm a "crazy dog lady" so dogs themselves inspire me. We can learn a lot from them (and animal world in general!) - for example, my girl was attacked twice by pit bulls (thanks to their idiot owners... animal is never to blame, and yet they always suffer for our mistakes and behaviour). That didn't make her hate or fear other pit bulls; furthermore, a rescued staffie female became her bestest friend in the whole wide world. I am an avid supporter of pet adoption vs. purchase and responsible ownership vs. abusing animals (besides physical abuse, there is also forcing certain things on them - dog shows come to mind - that serve solely for inflating human ego, as the dogs would never care about such things), as well as wildlife and nature conservation - for every purchased dog or cat, one in the shelter is killed. With every "natural" pseudo-medicine from bear livers, rhino horns and tiger penises or whatever, we bring another species closer to extinction and I believe our children deserve to see and enjoy the same - or better - beautiful diversity of life we have been fortunate to see. Unlike animals, we humans are prone to preconceptions and prejudice - thanks to one of them made by certain veterinarians, my girl is not with me anymore. Something to think very hard about...

Editing

Very light adjustments of shadows and colours. I prefer my photos as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

For the time being, I have Nikon D750, Manfrotto tripod, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, older Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-6.5 and Nikkor 70-300mm f/3.5-6.5. I plan to switch to Sony Alpha r7, because it has focusing help which I came to sorely need - I developed astigmatism lately so it is next to impossible for me to use viewfinder to check what's in focus and what isn't.

Feedback

When taking photos of the pets, focus on their eyes. Never use a flashlight (I have seen some people doing it in nature, with their phones, and it makes me cringe) because it is harmful to animals' vision - if that wasn't already obvious. Since they are constantly moving, fast shutter speed is a must. Everything else is up to your creativity and skill.
