Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kew Gardens, London on the 27th of August 2019. This was my first ever visit and I fell in love with this whole place. If you go here, get here early because there is so much to see. I only managed to see half this place, it's definitely a two day thing if you can visit twice. There is also something for every season, so it's definitely worth a visit whenever you're in London.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon around 5pm, with clear sunny skies.

Lighting

I was blessed with beautiful lighting and clear skies. It was a really easy image to take.

Equipment

For this image I used my Nikon Coolpix P510, as it's a bridge camera I don't need any lenses. I didn't use any other equipment, this was a handheld shot. I didn't need to use flash as it was still light out and the sky was very clear.

Inspiration

I thought The Pagoda was simply stunning. It's one of my favourite pieces of Architecture from Kew Gardens and I just had to take this shot. I really wanted to take the shot from quite low to show the scale of the building. I feel it looks quite dramatic from this angle paired with it being in black and white.

Editing

Although the image came out well straight out of camera, I felt it would look better in black and white to create that dramatic feel. I did use the B&W Wilde Preset for this image. I also increased the clarity and reduced the highlights and slightly tweaked blacks and shadows.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon Coolpix P510 and my Lensball. You can create such stunning unique shots with a lensball. They're relatively cheap to buy so it's something every photographer should have. When I have more room in my bag I will also carry my tripod as you never know when you'll need it.

Feedback

Be prepared to get quite low to get the shot you want. I'm very tall so this was a struggle, I practically had to lay on the floor as The Pagoda is very tall. It was so worth it though.
